Overview

Fitchburg State’s 4+1 History option is designed for motivated students who want to combine their BA or BS in History with a Master of Arts in History. Students begin graduate-level coursework in the fall of their junior year, taking graduate courses instead of undergraduate courses. The number of required credits remain the same and students move seamlessly into the MA program upon completion of the bachelor’s degree. Students remain within the same department and working closely with the history faculty throughout their time.

Integration with teacher licensure

For students pursuing initial licensure in History (5–12), the 4+1 option is structured to align with Fitchburg State’s established secondary education pathways. Candidates strengthen both their content knowledge and pedagogical preparation, positioning themselves to enter the classroom with advanced expertise in their discipline.

A flexible, online, affordable MA in History

The History MA is offered fully online, providing flexibility for students balancing academic, professional, and personal commitments. Fitchburg State has been recognized nationally for the affordability of its online History master’s program. It offers flexible options, including both thesis and non-thesis options.
