This course offers students a cultural history of Latin America in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through the study of film and literature. The course is divided into four parts, each one corresponding to a major cinematic period in Latin American film: studio cinema, Neorealism / Art Cinema, New Latin American Cinema, and contemporary cinema. Students will learn to analyze the intersections between form and content in a select number of important Latin American films. We will situate these films in aesthetic, political, national, regional, and global context.
At the end of the course, students will visit Buenos Aires, Argentina in May 2025. Students will experience first hand the rich literary and filmic cultures of Latin America in one of the region's most dynamic, diverse and cosmopolitan cities. With its grand architecture, cobblestone streets, literary cafes and dynamic neighborhoods, Buenos Aires has provided an atmospheric setting for many films within the Latin American filmic tradition and beyond.
The program will include site visits to settings represented in the films studied in the course. Students will also visit major sites of critical importance to Latin American history and culture such as the Plaza de Mayo, The President's House (Casa Rosada), Recoleta Cemetery, world-famous museums and other, iconic locations. Other literary experiences will also be offered such as a Jorge Luis Borges Buenos Aires Walking Tour.
