This course offers students a cultural history of Latin America in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through the study of film and literature. The course is divided into four parts, each one corresponding to a major cinematic period in Latin American film: studio cinema, Neorealism / Art Cinema, New Latin American Cinema, and contemporary cinema. Students will learn to analyze the intersections between form and content in a select number of important Latin American films. We will situate these films in aesthetic, political, national, regional, and global context.
