Student Publications

The Point

The Point, an online newspaper produced by and for the students of Fitchburg State University, is housed in the English Studies department. The newspaper serves as a laboratory publication for the College Newspaper Production course, where students receive formal training in the following:

  • Copyediting
  • Photojournalism
  • Opinion writing
  • Newsroom management
  • Online production
  • Social media promotion

Participation is not limited to students enrolled in English courses. Any student on campus may submit materials.

Route 2

Route 2, the English Studies department's award-winning literary journal, publishes poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, criticism, and reviews once annually at the beginning of the Spring semester. Submissions for January issues must be submitted by the previous September. The journal is edited by students who have applied for these competitive positions. You can follow Route 2 on Twitter (@FSURoute2) and like us on Facebook (@Route2).

The Falconer

The Graduate Program’s literary journal, The Falconer, moves graduate students’ research outside the classroom and into the scholarly realm. The best work that our program’s students have done is reflective of original thinking and solid research skills learned in the classroom under the supervision of our able faculty. Topics have included British and American Canonicity, Revisiting Shakespeare, Jewish American Identity, The Novel, British Modernism, and American Voices. The journal showcases our program’s facility in moving our students from writing classroom essays to doing scholarly, publishable work.

English Club

English Club is open to all English Studies majors and minors as well as others who have an interest. Activities range from poetry slams, talent shows, writing groups, workshops on Secondary English Education, and invited talks. Students are encouraged to organize their own events and work with others to promote community in the department.

Sigma Tau Delta

Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. Students who meet the academic standards for joining the honor society are issued an invitation to induction. After induction, members and officers organize and participate in social activities such as Open Mic nights, professional development workshops on topics like applying to graduate school, and other events. There are also opportunities for presenting at the International English Honor Society Annual Convention.
