Students should apply for the Global Ambassador Scholarship in October 2024 on Academic Works and will find out what/if they received the scholarship before the first payment due date.

Students that receive the Global Ambassador Scholarship will subtract the scholarship evenly among the following payments.

  • Fulfills the following OLD General Education requirements: GDCN (Global Diversity Non-Western) 

Students may use this course as a prerequisite for upper-level GIS courses and as an elective for the GST, GIS, EES, and PHS major/minor requirements. 

Join Professor Jane Huang in Peru to study the interactions of humans and the environment. This 3 credit will meet after-spring break in March for this hands-on and outdoor-oriented activities. Students will learn to use GPS to conduct field surveys on campus and in the Fitchburg area. They will apply navigation skills, play geocaching games, process GPS data, and produce maps in a GIS. They will also go on field trips and have guest lectures. The course will provide intro-level training in geospatial technologies and prepare students for the program to Peru.

Students will then travel to Peru in May (after graduation) for 10 days to study the interaction of humans and the environment while witnessing some of the most extraordinary human-impacted landscapes. The main highlight of the program will be a day visit to one of the most beautiful wonders of the world, Machu Picchu (a UNESCO world heritage site)! Students will conduct a community-based mapping project while experiencing the incredible culture, history, and environment in Lima and Cusco. Other highlights include a service-learning beach clean up day, Lima City Tour, Larco Mar Museum, Sacred Valley, Cusco Recycling, Plant B-Green and LOOP (Life Out Of Plastic), the pioneer environmental organizations in Peru and learn about sustainable consumption and communities.

May 24 Cusco City Tour
Guest Lecture with Dr. Ortega at ISA Cusco Office
May 25 River Visit with Dr. Ortega. Accompanied by Dr. Ortega take a visit to the Riverbank to learn first-hand about the terrible situation the river is in, and the communities surrounding the river which very much depend on it. Recommendations for today: Closed toed shoes or sneakers or boots, face mask, sunglasses, hat, sunblock.
Landfill Visit with Dr. Ortega. Visit the Landfill, so close to Cusco main area, and yet so unknown by everyone. Learn about the history of this place, the state in which is in and so many other factors involving pollution and waste management. 
May 26 Check out of hotel. Flight to Lima (1 hr. 20 min.)

Studying abroad isn’t comparable to anything else. I was able to see environmental issues that I learned about in the classroom at the same time as seeing a new country, trying local foods, meeting new people, and visiting Machu Picchu.
