- Develop mathematical independence and experience open-ended inquiry
Program Overview
Pure mathematics is often described as the abstract or analytical fields of mathematics. A concentration in Pure Mathematics gives you a broad background in mathematics with courses in computational mathematics, statistics, applied mathematics and other fields. However, it will focus on more abstract concepts through many courses including analysis, algebra and number theory. This will give you a strong foundation for graduate school in Mathematics or in industry jobs.
Required Minor in Another Department
A core aspect in applied math is knowledge of another field. The student must also minor in one of the following areas: computer science, psychology, biology, chemistry, economics, geography/earth science or a minor approved by the Mathematics Department. Note: Many of the courses in the minor can be counted toward the liberal arts and sciences courses.
