Antivirus & Computer Maintenance

Self-Help Computing SupportWe recommend you take the following steps to keep your computer healthy and safe while accessing the network:

  1. Install antivirus software and keep it up-to-date.
  2. Keep your operating system up-to-date by installing security updates.
  3. Ensure you are running a recent operating system and upgrade to a newer version if yours is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

Antivirus Software

Fitchburg State University provides McAfee VirusScan/AntiSpyware Enterprise free of charge to students, faculty and staff*. This software is also installed on all university-owned computers.

Antivirus and antispyware software provides excellent protection from malicious applications that can damage computers and compromise networks. The Help Desk is available to help anyone install and maintain antivirus and antispyware applications and encourages everyone to be safe when accessing the Internet and network environments.

*Note: Faculty and staff are licensed to install the McAfee software on a single home computer that is used for university-related work.

Alternatively, Windows 8 and above users may choose to turn on Windows Defender for antivirus protection.

Updating Your Operating System

  • Windows Update
  • Mac OS - Click on the Apple icon on the upper left of your computer. Choose "App Store..." and click "Updates" to download any available updates.

We recommend you configure your computer update settings to automatically check for and install updates.

Computer Maintenance Tools

  • CCleaner (Windows)
    A utility designed to fully clear your system of any temporary files including temporary internet files, history, cookies, recently viewed documents, and more. Also includes a registry cleaner, a startup program editor, and an advanced uninstall tool.
  • Defraggler (Windows)
    An alternate to the built-in defragmenting utility in Windows. Provides an informative visual interpretation of the fragmentation of your hard drive, allowing you to even defragment individual files.
  • Spybot S&D (Windows)
    A basic anti-malware program that will remove spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, and even some rootkits from a system. Requires scanning and updates be started manually. Also provides an immunization feature to block known harmful websites and cookies.
  • Spyware Blaster (Windows)
    This program is designed not to scan and remove malware, but rather block it before it enters the system by using blacklists of known bad websites and cookies to bolster your internet browser's security.
