IRP: Research Roundtable
12:00pm - 1:00pm Hammond Hall | G11About This Event
Our next installment of Research Roundtable is on Friday, November 7, 12-1 p.m. in Hammond G11! This semester we have been exploring placement testing practices and their impact on student success. Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch!
Our next paper: Reading ‘rithmatic: examining the impact of a literacy intervention on mathematics placement assessment. - Elliott et al. (2023) explores how students’ reading skills influence their performance on math placement tests. The authors found that students who participated in a literacy-focused intervention performed significantly better on math placement assessments, largely because they could more effectively interpret word problems and understand test questions. These results suggest that math placement scores often reflect reading ability as much as math proficiency. The study concludes that integrating literacy support into math preparation can lead to more accurate placement decisions and better student outcomes, particularly for those who struggle with academic reading.
Who should join? Anyone interested in higher education research or best practices, regardless of background or expertise. Whether you’ve been reading scholarly articles for years or are just beginning, your perspective is valuable. The hope is that participants read the full paper, but the expectation is at least the abstract (and if possible, the introduction and conclusion) are read.
As always, supporting resources and guides for readers are available on the Institutional Research webpage.
We look forward to seeing you at the table—come curious, come hungry, and bring your unique perspective!
