Melissa’s Fit

Melissa DiPhilippo (’19)

Melissa DiPhilippo’s major in secondary education did not prevent her from participating in another of her greatest passions—softball. Her love of the game matched her desire to teach, and she’s grateful to Fitchburg State for providing the ability to do both.

She joined the team her freshman year and immediately found the company of 27 young women on campus. Athletics served as an instant backbone, an early system of support, but it was also a gateway that Melissa used to explore other connections on campus. Soon she was meeting people in other athletic areas, as well as other clubs and organizations on campus.

Melissa also became a resident assistant during her junior year, and she says that one of the most rewarding things about the job is helping her fellow students build connections in the building.

While athletics was Melissa’s doorway into the larger campus community, she wants everyone to know that’s not the path everyone needs to take, and that there are plenty of ways to explore campus:

“Rock the Block is a great opportunity for anyone to get out there and see what the campus has to offer. There’s seriously something for everyone there and you really should participate in order to find your fit.”
