Internships and Writing Associates

An increasing number of our majors choose to do an internship. Students may opt for three, six, nine, or twelve credit hours for their work, the equivalent of one, two, three, or four courses. Examples include positions at newspapers, non-profit organizations, colleges, in television and radio, and at a number of businesses. The internship experience provides students necessary “real world” experience and helps them build professional portfolios. While there are many sources of internships, two good websites to start your internship search are BookJobs and Mediabistro. Students interested in participating in an Internship and businesses or publications interested in working with Fitchburg State University English Studies Interns should contact Dr. Doris Schmidt or Dr. Steve Edwards.

Writing Associates

The department offers academically talented students opportunities to work closely with a sponsoring faculty member in courses across the curriculum to serve as writing associates, class-linked writing tutors who assist students with their work. Each semester the English Studies faculty member who manages the program works with 10-12 students in Independent Studies. Students are responsible for attending the classes in which they are assigned and meeting on a regular basis with their sponsoring faculty member and the program coordinator. For further information, contact Dr. Patrice Gray or Dr. Steve Edwards.
