The course is designed to strengthen the student's understanding of the issues and factors constraining the achievement of public health goals around the world. The impacts of social, cultural, physical, political and economic determinants of health are analyzed in a global context. Emphasis is placed on how factors within these different determinants of health affect the provision of health services and health outcomes. Examination of the impact of globalization and trans-national collaboration is included.

March 7- Arrive in San Jose, check into hostel, welcome dinner and cultural show

March 8- Observation of health clinic, discussion on Costa Rican Health System

March 9- Juan Castro Blanco National Park, hot springs, free time in the evening

March 10- Optional zip lining

March 11- Observational rotation of hospitals

March 12- Tour of geriatric center, assist in screenings of patients, roundtable discussion with health professionals, “Costa Rican’s Perspectives on Health System, Testimonials and Challenges”

March 13- Tour of pediatric center, assist in screenings of patients

March 14- Community Health Fair, nursing students will assist in basic health services

March 15- Community Health Fair, nursing students will assist in basic health services, Farewell Dinner

March 16- Return to United States
