Best Practices for Teaching Remotely

Best practice in online learning would provide students with a variety of course material (video, interactive media, lecture content) equal to the 3 hours of face to face class instruction. 

  • Set expectations—Tell your students how to contact you. Will you use the Discussion Board for questions? Email? Online office hours? How long will it take you to respond? 24-48 business hours?
  • Explain upfront what you will require—Will you hold synchronous sessions? What happens if a student misses the session? How will students complete assignments? Will they upload then to Blackboard? 
  • How will you be assessing student learning?—Tests and quizzes? Class participation in discussion boards? Written work? Are your assignments available online? Will you need to modify instructions and deadlines?
  • Be present—Show your students that you are still accessible to them. Be visible in the Discussion Board or via email or through Blackboard Announcements. Set up an “I have a question” thread in the Discussion Boards so students can ask you and each other for help. 

Set up an “Off topic chat” in the Discussion Board that will allow students to communicate with each other.

In your course materials, employ visuals whenever possible to keep students engaged with the material and break up text  https://unsplash.com (free photos) or Google images search for infographics, etc.

Break up long text passages for ease of reading. Consider putting very long text into a downloadable pdf so students can print and read it offline. Use 14 point sans serif font in Blackboard for best readability.
