Spring Break 2021 with Professors Benes and Stone, Nursing Program in Costa Rica

Professor Deborah Benes and Professor Deborah Stone led a group of twelve nursing students to San Jose to learn and compare the Costa Rican Health Care System with our own. This "Global Public Health" course had students observe the impacts of social, cultural, physical, political, and economic determinants of health as analyzed in a global context. The group assisted in pediatric and geriatric health care clinics, heard from medical professionals, were exposed to medical Spanish, participated in a community health care, and more.

Tentative Itinerary for Costa Rica Nursing Program, March 2021 

Day 1 - Thursday: 

  • Arrival into SJO airport
  • Welcome dinner with folkloric show and itinerary review. 

Day 2 - Friday:

  • Interactive talk about Costa Rica’s context: culture, history, and socioeconomic lifestyle.
  • Learning about the health system of Costa Rica: history, relation with the abolition of the army, how it works, past, present, and future.
  • Talk/visit in a government institution to learn about how Costa Rica has faced COVID-19

Day 3 - Saturday:

  • Departure to Sámara, Guanacaste.
  • Free time at a beach town

Day 4 - Sunday:

  • Free time at a beach town

Day 5 - Monday:

  • Visit to the local EBAIS: talk about the work done and health projects they have and interaction with the health team.
  • Possible screenings to the patients of the center
  • Possible presentation/workshop by FSU students to the EBAIS team and/or community. 

Day 6 - Tuesday:

  • Visit to a local Geriatric center: talk about the work done in the place and interaction with the patients and health team.
  • Possible screenings to the patients of the center
  • Possible presentation/workshop by FSU students to the Geriatric team and/or patients. 

Day 7 - Wednesday:

  • Visit to a local School: talk about the work and health projects they have and interaction with the students and team.
  • Possible screenings to the students or joint work in the projects they have available.
  • Possible presentation/workshop by FSU students to the school team, students, and/or community. 

Day 8 - Thursday:

  • Visit to a Pediatric center: talk about the work and health projects they have and interaction with the kids and team.
  • Possible screenings to the kids of the center.
  • Possible presentation/workshop by FSU students to the Pediatric team and/or kids.

Day 9 - Friday:

  • Visit to a local Non Profit Organization that strongly interacts and helps the community: talk about the work and health projects they have and interaction with the team/community.
  • Possible joint work in the projects they have available.
  • Possible presentation/workshop by FSU students to the community.

Day 10 - Saturday:

  • Departure from Liberia airport.
