Are you a nursing student who is interested in study abroad? This program is for you! The Department of Nursing has created this program specifically for nursing majors who are interested in study abroad, and the 2018 destination is Accra, Ghana. Join Professors Benes and Duah on this insightful journey to Accra and the surrounding areas as you look at the impacts of health care on the local community.

NURS 4400 - Community Health Nursing (6 cr.)

This course focuses on systems concepts as a basis for applying the nursing process with aggregate clients in the community. Special emphasis is placed on nursing care of vulnerable populations including the homeless, people of poverty, minority populations, women and children, and older adults. Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention measures are used when applying the nursing process in a variety of distributive care settings. Clinical experience occurs in community agencies. 

This faculty led study abroad program includes a mandatory trip to Accra, Ghana.

Prerequisite(s): Course is open to traditional juniors & seniors, LPN to BS, RN to BS students. 

Documentation of yellow fever vaccination is required for those over nine months of age upon arrival in Ghana.

Day 1: Friday, June 1st, 2018 - Arrive in Accra

Day: Arrive in Accra, meet CISabroad On-Site Program Coordinator (OPC) at the airport,
and transfer to accommodations
Afternoon: Enjoy a tour of Jamestown and visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
Evening: Group Welcome Dinner and Orientation
Meals: Dinner
Transportation: Airport to accommodations (one group transfer via private coach);
accommodations to dinner (private transportation)

Day 2: Monday, June 4th, 2018 - Accra

7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.: Activities arranged by West End University

Transportation: Private transportation (pick up and drop off to local hospital)

Morning: Enjoy a visit to Kakum National Park, with a local guide
Afternoon: Visit Elmina Castle
