Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a high school academic enrichment program for university bound students from Fitchburg and Leominster in grades 9-12. The year round TRIO program, funded by the Department of Education, is free to eligible participants.

Summer Program:

The summer program is a six-week education program in which students live on campus from Monday through Friday. Students live in the university residence halls with residential staff counselors/tutors.

Tuesday through Friday mornings, students will take a variety of classes such as algebra I or II, biology, chemistry, problem solving, statistics, Spanish, Shakespeare, Immigration studies, and Japanese American literature. All students take the core curriculum courses based on their academic need or interest. A series of developmental workshops and study skills are held Monday through Thursday evenings. Small study groups are held for homework time and tutorial assistance.

Monday through Thursday afternoons, many students participate in the afternoon work experience, located on campus or at an agency in Fitchburg and Leominster, MA. Other students participate in an intensive field science or English (Readers as Teachers) class every afternoon.

A variety of educational, university visits, and recreational field trips are planned. Youth will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural field trips relevant to their summer studies and interests.

Academic Year Program:

The program continues throughout the school year to stress the development of academic skills for the students with school-based services and twenty-four Saturday Academic sessions. The staff works closely with each student, their parents/guardians, and the school guidance counselors. The sessions include: touring, group counseling in guidance and teen issues, SAT/ACT preparation, and enrichment classes in English, math and science. A program of university preparation activities (e.g. university visits, admissions and financial aid) is provided for the juniors and seniors. Educational and cultural enrichment opportunities are also offered throughout the academic year.

Expanding Horizons (Student Support Services)

The Expanding Horizons Program is designed to enhance the academic success of 200 students who come from families with low incomes, are first generation in university and/or have a disability. Program staff will foster a cooperative work environment to strengthen academic preparation, build academic confidence, establish long term career objectives and encourage development of leadership skills for eligible students.

NSF: Acquiring a Bat's Perspective on Biosonar Echoes

This grant involves professors and students and its goal is to develop instrumentation that will advance research in the field of bat echolocation. The participants propose to develop instrumentation to acquire and interpret binaural recordings of ultrasonic echoes reflected from various prey insects and environmental objects.

The Developing a Culture of Assessment grant at Fitchburg State University uses a three-year plan that will result in assessment and data collection centralized in one office; an institutional assessment plan; and 100 percent of undergraduate students involved in assessment activities.

A Seamless Transition to a BS in Nursing: Education Innovation for LPNs to BS in Nursing

Fitchburg State University, in partnership with Worcester State University and three regional Licensed Practical Nursing programs–Assabet Valley, Montachusett Technical and Bay Path Regional Technical Vocational High Schools–are developing a model LPN to BS in Nursing curriculum which will exist in an accelerated stand-alone program. The implementation and scale-up project proposed is a model for seamless transitions and progressions for students from LPN certificate programs to four-year institutions that offer a BS in Nursing. The primary purpose of this project is to institutionalize and launch an LPN to BS in Nursing track in both Fitchburg and Worcester State Universities and provide a working model for replication on a statewide level.
