Students working in a lab

We are committed to providing health and safety services that protect the university community and the environment. Our goals are to provide the campus education relating to EHS issues and promote a positive and safe work environment.

Below you’ll find documentation that reinforces our commitment to proper procedures, or you can view our Safety Bulletins for additional safety tips on a variety of issues.

Chemical Hygiene Plan

The purpose of the Chemical Hygiene Plan is to describe proper practices, procedures, equipment, and facilities for all personnel (employees, students, visitors or other persons) working in laboratories at Fitchburg State, to protect them from potential health hazards presented by chemicals used in the workplace, and to keep exposures below specified limits. It is the responsibility of all affected personnel to know and to follow the provisions of this CHP.

Biosafety Plan

For the Biosafety Plan, federal, state, and local agencies have developed regulations for protecting laboratory workers and the general public from the potential health hazards associated with the use of biological agents in laboratories. Some of these regulations, such as those from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), have the force of law while those from NIH and CDC are recommended guidelines. As part of the grant application process, many federal and private granting agencies require applicants to certify that they adhere to all federally mandated requirements and suggested guidelines.

Exposure Control Plan

The Fitchburg State University Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan has been developed in accordance with both the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) and Fitchburg State’s concerns for individuals’ safety.

Lockout/Tagout Plan

The Lockout/Tagout Plan (PDF) establishes the minimum requirements for the lockout of energy isolating devices whenever maintenance or servicing is done machines or equipment.
