All undergraduate programs in teacher education are grounded in the liberal arts and sciences, with a comprehensive foundation in pedagogy that results in the preparation of highly competent teachers. The University's strength is rooted in its commitment to preparing person-centered, reflective practitioners, who are able to construct, articulate, and apply effective educational theories and research.

All teacher education majors graduate with a dual major in Education and in the liberal arts and sciences. The liberal arts and sciences major is required of all future teachers by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Fitchburg State University.

Secondary Education Programs

The teacher licensure programs in Secondary Education are housed in the academic departments of Biology, English, History, Mathematics and Technology/Engineering Education. All undergraduate programs in Secondary Education share a common core of education courses found in the University Catalog. Undergraduate licensure programs in Secondary Education are offered for students seeking initial licensure in five different areas. A Bachelor of Science and/or Bachelor of Arts degree with specialization in Secondary Education in any of the following areas is awarded upon successful completion of the program.

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology, 8-12
  • Bachelor of Science in English, 8-12
  • Bachelor of Science in History 8-12
  • Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, 8-12
  • Bachelor of Science in Technology Education, 5-12
