Summer orientation schedule announced

Fitchburg State launches a new summer orientation program in 2016, creating an overnight experience designed to lay the foundation for a strong, compelling and cohesive student structure.

The summer orientation programs will be held Monday, June 13 to Tuesday, June 14; Thursday, June 16 to Friday, June 17; Monday, June 20 to Tuesday, June 21; and Wednesday, June 22 to Thursday, June 23. Incoming students should register online here.

Each two-day orientation session will prepare students for the expectations of rigorous academic work and active social engagement. Check-in for orientation will start at 8 a.m. with welcoming remarks at 9:30 a.m. There will be a discussion of opportunities and outcomes followed by a session on academic transitions before lunch. After lunch, there will be small group activities followed by individual sessions on student support services, advising and registration, housing and commuter life, and tours of the campus. There will be a break at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:30 p.m. and then a multimedia presentation on clubs and organizations at 6:30 p.m. The first night will conclude with a dance, open time in the game room and the Athletics and Recreation Center.

Students will spend the night in the residence hall. The second day of the orientation will start with breakfast followed by a college-based competition, a debriefing session and then lunch for students and parents.

Orientation sessions will also be held for parents and guardians, including a panel discussion on campus safety, expectations, support services and transitioning to college life. There will a panel discussion with students after lunch, followed by breakout sessions on campus life and support services. Parent orientation will conclude with a reception with faculty and staff. Parent programs will be held on the first day of orientation, but parents will be invited back for a barbecue on the afternoon of the second day of student orientation.
