Posted 11/25/14

The Fitchburg State University Humanities Department will ring in the holiday season with a series of free concerts in December on the university campus.

The festivities begin with a choral concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8 at Weston Auditorium, 353 North St. The concert will feature a variety of choral literature and vocal arrangements. The 34-member Fitchburg State University Choir, directed by faculty member Marjorie Ness and accompanied by William Ness will perform, as well as the 13-member Fitchburg State Chamber Singers, also conducted by Marjorie Ness.

The music continues at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Weston Auditorium, 353 North St. when the Fitchburg State University Band and Ensembles perform. The concert band will present an evening of new band music as well as traditional favorites including “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music;  “Whiplash;” a modern piece by Eliot Del Borgo entitled “Ancient Air and Dance;” and a medley from Beauty and the Beast. The jazz band will present classics ranging from the swing-era “Stompin’ at the Savoy” to the modern piece “Short Story.” The guitar ensemble will play traditional tunes such as “Scarborough Fair,” “Greensleeves” and “Jingle Bells.” The percussion ensemble will have many surprises in store.
