Educational Leadership and Management (MEd, non-licensure)

Degree Overview

Students who do not wish to pursue licensure can take a 39-credit program of study — in either the School Principal or Supervisor/Director concentrations — that meets their professional and personal goals in Educational Leadership and Management.

Applicants to the non-licensure concentration do not need to submit scores from the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL).

The MEd program in Educational Leadership and Management is designed for students with the desire to:

  • Develop competencies in managerial skills related to political arenas, personnel, fiscal affairs, acquisition of material resources, diverse publics and pupil populations, and organizational change
  • Strengthen, deepen and expand the knowledge base in the field of leadership and management in order to anticipate and to solve current and future problems inherent in the educational system
  • Demonstrate through coursework and field-based experiences the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are required to lead and manage an educational enterprise effectively and efficiently

M.Ed. EDLM (Non-Licensure)
Two-Year Course Rotation

Program Prerequisites (Non-Licensure Candidates)

Students who do not wish to pursue licensure may take the core EDLM courses in either the School Principal concentration or the Supervisor/Director concentration, along with a three semester hour elective and an Action Research course, for a total of 39 semester hours.

Program at a Glance


Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling admission basis. Admissions requirements are as follows:

  • An official transcript of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Professional resume
  • Official transcripts of graduate level course work from a regionally accredited institution (if applicable)
  • Graduate application and fee
  • An essay, no more than one page in length, in response to one of the following questions:
    • Tell us about a positive situation in which you helped a person and made a significant difference in that person’s life.
    • What are the most important factors in establishing a long-term working relationship with students, friends, etc.?
    • Tell us about a significant event that involved you in a teaching or helping mode.
      • Describe the situation as it occurred at the time.
      • What did you do in that particular situation?
      • How did you feel about the situation at the time you were experiencing it?
      • How do you feel about the situation now?
      • What would you change, if anything?


Face-to-face and online courses offered in the evenings with some day courses during the summer.
