The Data Science Certificate program is on hold and no longer accepting applications.

The data science certificate offers the opportunity for students to develop knowledge and skills in data analysis and visualization, database development, machine learning, and data mining. This certificate will enhance competitiveness and technical knowledge, and prepares students for professional careers in the rapidly changing field of managing, mining, integrating, and analyzing big data across a wide array of areas such as medicine, bioinformatics, government, education, marketing, security, financial management, and many other fields.

Requirements and Curriculum

The certificate consists of the following 4, 3-credit required courses:

  • CSC 7015 Introduction to Data Science
  • CSC 8008 Data Exploration, Analytics, and Visualization
  • CSC 8016 Machine Learning for Data Science
  • CSC 8015 Data Mining and Predictive Analytics

Program entry requirement: Bachelor degree in computer science or other field with a sufficient background or knowledge in the following:

  • Computer programming
  • Probability and statistics (including the requisite additional background in linear algebra and calculus)
  • Database design

This background may be gained by:

  • Demonstration of prior content acquisition through academic credits earned in prior course work
  • Professional experience in the field
  • Non-credit training completed through professional development
  • Undergraduate course work in computer science and/or related fields
  • Completion of the following courses:
    • CSC 1550 Computer Science II (or pass the placement test)
    • MATH 1700 Applied Statistics
    • CSC 7500 Database Design

Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling admission basis. Admissions requirements are as follows:

  • An official transcript of a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Computer Science or a related field OR a bachelor's degree and sufficient knowledge in:
    • Computer programming - CSC 1550 Computer Science II (or pass the placement test)
    • Probability and statistics (including the requisite additional background in linear algebra and calculus) - MATH 1700 Statistics
    • Database design - CSC 7500 Database Design
  • Professional resume
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Graduate application and fee

Delivery/Time Frame

On-campus courses are offered in the evenings and some courses may be offered online or in hybrid format. While you can complete the program in as few as 2 years, you have 6 years to complete the program.

Program Highlights

  • Courses from this certificate may be used as electives in the M.S. in Computer Science degree.
  • Low barrier to program entry - bachelors degree does not need to be in computer science (applicants must demonstrate necessary background knowledge or take prerequisite courses)
