Supporting Positive Behavior in Inclusive Classrooms: A Hybrid Course

To be eligible to take this course, you must be a Massachusetts public school general or special education teacher, related service provider, school/guidance counselor, or paraeducator working with elementary, middle or secondary students with disabilities in an inclusive classroom environment.*

This course will explore the research on effective practices for assessing, planning, and implementing individual, classroom and school-wide positive behavior support for the purpose of designing learning environments that include ALL students. We will review effective models of school change such as Responsive Classroom and examine patterns of problem behavior through a systems approach.

Through this research and exploration, participants will examine various practices for establishing effective learning communities while considering both the functional and environmental characteristics that are related to specific behaviors. Participants will become more proficient in collecting and using data, utilizing the results of a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and designing and implementing effective Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Plans.

A final project is required along with two other writing assignments. No prior course work is required, however, participants must be currently working in a school and have online access.
