Tips for Cleaning Your Room, Suite, and/or Apartment

General Room Cleaning Tips

  • Return your room to its original condition (the condition it was in when you moved in).
  • Clean your room/suite/apartment thoroughly, sweep the floor and dispose of trash & large items as directed.
  • Remove all personal property, including carpet and furniture.
  • Remove all tape and marks from your floors and walls.
  • Remove all decorations from walls, bulletin boards, ceilings and windows.
  • Window screens are to be in place – a fee will be assessed to re-install screens or for missing/damaged screens.
  • Place all trash in bags provided and take all trash to appropriate disposal area designated by your RA.
  • Close and lock all windows and doors. Turn off all lights and faucets.

General Apartment Cleaning Tips

Student Room, Suite Area, Living/Dining Area

  • Move furniture to its original position and reassemble.
  • Wash off desk, dressers, tables, chairs, window ledges and other such items.
  • Wipe down walls removing any tape residue and scuff marks.
  • Vacuum and/or sweep the floor. Wash as necessary to remove tape residue and scuff marks.
  • Remove all trash to designate location and remove all non-university furniture.
  • Close windows and pull down shades/blinds.

Cleaning the Bathroom (Townhouse/North Street Only)

Shower:

  • Turn the shower on and let it run for a few minutes to wet the shower walls, floor and curtain.
  • Turn the water off and spray Boraxo, or other similar cleaning products, on entire shower area (walls, floor, and curtain). Let it stand for about ½ hour. Using a shower brush, scrub the walls, floor and curtain to thoroughly remove any green areas, stains, soap deposits, etc. Rinse all areas thoroughly with clean water.
  • Either scrub the shower curtain or place it in the washing machine with some detergent. DO NOT DRY IT!

Toilet:

  • Spray all porcelain (white) areas of the toilet with Boraxo, or similar cleaning product.
  • Scrub the inside of the bowl with a toilet brush to remove all stains.
  • Wash the toilet seat and outside of the bowl with a sponge or cloth.
  • Wash stall doors and walls, if applicable, with a damp sponge or cloth with appropriate cleaning product.

Sinks:

  • Spray porcelain (white) area of sink with Boraxo and wash thoroughly.
  • Spray counter with an appropriate cleaning product and wash counter and cabinet.
  • Spray mirror with glass cleaner and wipe clean, including interior of cabinet.

Floor:

  • Mop entire floor area, including behind toilet and doors with Spic’ n Span or similar cleaning product.

Kitchen (Townhouses/North Street ONLY)

Cabinets:

  • Remove any items in cabinets so they are completely empty.
  • Wash both the interior and exterior of the cabinet with a mild detergent using a sponge or cloth.

Stove/Oven:

  • Thoroughly clean top and sides of stove with dish detergent. Also, thoroughly scrub drip pans removing any burnt items/stains.
  • Thoroughly clean the oven using an oven cleaner. Spray with oven cleaner. Let it stand for approximately ½ hour. Using a scrub brush or pad, thoroughly remove any burnt residue and stains. Be sure not to get cleaner on heating coil as this may damage the unit.

Refrigerator:

  • Remove any items left in refrigerator so it is completely empty.
  • Wash both the interior and exterior of the unit using dish detergent and a sponge or cloth.
  • Remove the crisper drawer and thoroughly wash behind the drawer.
  • Remember to defrost the freezer before cleaning the unit.

Floor:

  • Mop entire floor area with Spic’ n Span or similar cleaning product.

Trash Talk

Do not throw trash into the hallway or in rest room trash cans. All trash should be taken to your area dumpsters.

Hazardous Trash (i.e. computer monitors, refrigerators and TVs) should be placed in the designated area for your residence hall. See postings for proper drop location.
