The mission of the Fitchburg State University Department of Nursing is to prepare professional nurses capable of meeting societal healthcare needs in a variety of settings. In their teaching, the faculty nurtures respect for diversity, social responsibility, and a commitment to excellence. Collaborative and interactive teaching methods foster the use of critical thinking to build a strong foundation for the practice of holistic nursing. Legal, ethical, and professional standards guide the faculty in teaching the art and science of nursing.
As the first public university in Massachusetts to offer a Nursing program, Fitchburg State has a long distinguished history in Nursing education. We are proud of our reputation for excellence and of our ongoing accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and full approval status from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Our Department of Nursing offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing. We also offer an online R.N. to B.S. in Nursing program, and recently began an LPN to B.S. in Nursing track, which grants advanced placement to LPNs. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science in Forensic Nursing.
Class of 2013
Nothing reflects more strongly on the Department of Nursing than the success of its graduates. For the past 3 years, 97 percent of first-time NCLEX test takers pass the licensure exam. Our alumni are qualified for entry-level positions in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities or community health agencies. Graduates are in great demand in the professional job market, and many have earned advanced degrees and have progressed to leadership positions in practice, administration, research, and education.
Applying to Fitchburg State University was the second best decision I have ever made in my life! (The first was to marry my loving, best friend of a husband.) I entered Fitchburg State as a non-traditional student who collected colleges and chipped away at my degree for years. Four states and five colleges later, I moved back to New England in early 2008 with the intention of completing my Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. I applied to several colleges in the area and was incredibly fortunate to be accepted by Fitchburg State University. I knew Fitchburg State would help me to achieve my goals. I knew that Fitchburg State’s nursing program had an excellent reputation for producing proficient nurses. I knew that after years of dedication, hard work, patience, and more than a few sleepless nights, I would have that bachelor degree in nursing in my hand. However, I had no idea of the caliber of opportunities Fitchburg State would offer me. I had no idea how valuable the education at Fitchburg State would really be. In short, I had no idea that Fitchburg State would help me to make my dreams come true!
Today, I am a proud graduate of Fitchburg State’s BSN program and a gainfully employed registered nurse in the operating room at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA. I am forever grateful to Fitchburg State’s nursing department as I would not be in this position without the help and support of the qualified faculty and staff. Their belief in me helped me to believe in myself. And here I am, enjoying personal and professional success in ways I couldn’t even imagine until now. I highly recommend Fitchburg State University to anyone who has the drive and desire to pursue their dreams. The confidence, pride, and success you’ll enjoy as a graduate of this outstanding university is beyond worth it!
