Program Overview

The Human Services Program educates students in the skills and competencies necessary to enter and advance their careers in a wide variety of social service arenas. The Program integrates classroom instruction with a graded series of field-based experiences, including an intensive internship, to foster the application of knowledge and skills in community-based settings. It is founded on a strength-based empowerment perspective which emphasizes the enhancement of clients capabilities to meet the challenges they face. Graduates pursue careers in direct service to clients, public advocacy, and in the administration of human services in agency and government settings.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The Human Services program prepares professionals who work with people in many settings and to enter graduate study to pursue interests in management, aging and gerontology, criminal justice and/or juvenile justice, family and children’s services, mental health and mental retardation, and other areas.  The programs qualify students to pursue careers in community-based services such as mental health and substance abuse treatment, child and family services, disability-related supports, elder services and criminal justice arenas.

"Not only is the Human Services program at Fitchburg State highly personalized, the exposure to the realities of life are embraced from the start.  My professors accepted me as the unique individual that I am and helped guide me though life's challenges.  They fully supported me in identifying my true life passions but, most importantly, empowered me to pursue them.  I am forever thankful for my years with my professors in the Human Services program." - Brittany Brassard '11
