Geography

Program Overview

The Geo/Physical Sciences program  offers majors and minors in geography and earth science as well as some physics courses at Fitchburg State University.  Consistent with the mission of the university, the Geo/Physical Science faculty is committed to excellent teaching in a challenging yet cooperative atmosphere. Students explore the distribution and interaction of natural and human systems on global, regional, and local scales. A large part of the learning is experiential and steeped in investigation in order to teach essential content knowledge and skills in critical thinking and problem solving. Hands-on experiences in the laboratory and the field bring together theory and application, contribute to scholarly development, and prepare students for a range of careers.

FACILITIES

Dedicated physics and physical science laboratories are located within the Condike Science Building. Geography and Earth Systems Science have the latest version of the prevailing GIS software program with a campus-wide license, a dozen GPS units, a high quality HP plotter, and laboratories at the McKay Campus School. Also available are research projects, both local and national scale, led by geo-faculty with student involvement components.

The planning for a new science building on our campus goes forward.   The project involves the construction of a new building to house biology and chemistry laboratories and the renovation of the Condike Science Building, where labs for earth sciences, geography and physics will be located, along with offices and classrooms for all the sciences.
