Exercise and Sports Science
The discipline of Exercise and Sports Science has its roots in physical education, yet has emerged over the last 30+ years as an entirely separate field of study. While physical education programs are fundamentally designed to train educators, exercise science programs (often called kinesiology) are based on the scientific foundations and applications to exercise and sports, and do not produce physical education teachers.
Students majoring in Exercise and Sports Science choose one of two concentrations: clinical exercise physiology or fitness management. Both concentrations integrate anatomy, physiology, physics, psychology, and learning theory to describe and explain responses and adaptations to exercise and training, and apply that knowledge to enhance physical potential for health, for sport, and in rehabilitation. The programs also draw from Biology and Business Administration to provide a foundation in these disciplines to support exercise science applications as well as to enhance career preparedness.
“ The Exercise and Sports Science Department is following right in line with the University, as we continue to grow and improve each year. As a proud member of the winning NEACSM College Bowl team, I believe that more and more students are realizing the quality of education being offered here. The faculty of the EXSS department are dedicated teachers who are always ready to help. From the department Chair through to the Secretary, there is a culture of support. It's an exciting time for this young major and I look forward to seeing what the future brings.”–Kevon Plouffe, 2012
Career opportunities are numerous and varied for Exercise and Sports Science graduates in both concentrations. Students may elect to work in an entry-level position immediately upon graduation, or they may choose to further their education in an Allied Health graduate program. The Exercise and Sports Science major prepares them for either option.
