Middle School Education (MEd, online/hybrid)

It's official! Our new programs leading to initial licensure in English, general science, history, or mathematics for middle school teachers were approved. The official launch of these programs is scheduled for this fall. The programs are offered in an online/hybrid format, with a low-residency requirement. This means that some of the courses may be offered fully online, and some may have one or two meetings on Saturdays, so the prospect of travel to campus for class meetings will be much easier to manage. Courses will also be offered in a 7-week schedule rotation, allowing students to focus on one course at a time and maintain half-time status throughout the year, which satisfies the enrollment requirement for financial aid or student loans.

Degree Overview

The Middle School Education (Initial Licensure, 5-8) degree offers four concentrations; English, history, general science and mathematics, and is designed for individuals who have completed an appropriate baccalaureate degree in the field of English, history, science, mathematics, or a degree in a closely related area, and wish to obtain an Initial Teaching License (grades 5-8) in their content area. In addition, candidates who earn an Initial License in one of the Middle School Education content areas may apply for and obtain an Initial License in another content area by passing the appropriate Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). The program meets the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) Professional Standards for Teachers (PSTs).
