The MAT Non-Licensure History program is on hold and no longer accepting applications. Students interested in graduate programs in history can apply to the MA in History, which is relaunching in spring 2018 as an online/hybrid program.

Degree Overview

The Masters of Arts in Teaching History (Non-Licensure) provides teachers with the opportunity to design an individualized course of advanced studies in history and education.

The curriculum for the MAT programs aims to:

  • Promote graduate-level historical scholarship
  • Support and encourage the development of a wide range of historical knowledge, including a global perspective
  • Expand the scholar/teacher skills in the complex process of teaching history
  • Enable practicing teachers to expand their strategies for teaching history from a multicultural, gender-balanced perspective

Program at a Glance


Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling admission basis. Admissions requirements are as follows:

  • Official transcript of a bachelor’s degree preferably with (but not limited to) a major or minor in History from a regionally accredited institution
  • Copy of Professional teaching license in major
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Professional resume
  • Official transcripts of graduate level course work from a regionally accredited institution (if applicable)
  • Graduate application and fee
  • An essay, no more than one page in length, in response to one of the following questions:
    • Tell us about a positive situation in which you helped a person and made a significant difference in that person’s life.
    • What are the most important factors in establishing a long-term working relationship with students, friends, etc.?
    • Tell us about a significant event that involved you in a teaching or helping mode. Describe the situation as it occurred at the time.
      • What did you do in that particular situation?
      • How did you feel about the situation at the time you were experiencing it?
      • How do you feel about the situation now?
      • What would you change, if anything?


Online and on-campus courses in the evening with some day courses during the summer.
